The time is now to hire a photographer for the summer season. You have thought about it, looked with longing at your friend’s photos and decided to leap. You want to have pictures taken of your horse. You have a secret board on Pinterest; you have picked out an outfit and daydreamed about your pictures. BUT FIRST, let me share some helpful tips and things to consider before you start reaching out to photographers.
Photographer Style
If you didn’t know that there was a photography style between photographers, you do now! Some photographers have bright whites, clean lines and posed images. Others have dark and moody colours, contrasting shadows and creative images. I would suggest looking around at all the different styles and seeing which speaks to you.
Photographers shoot and edit a certain way to what they are used to and what they are great at. It often takes years of developing a unique style, so please don’t ask us to change that for you. Just hire the right photographer.
Do they have a Niche
I don’t think that the topic of having a Niche gets discussed enough, but it sure makes sense. You wouldn’t hire a mechanic specializing in foreign sports cars to work on your tractor, so hiring a newborn photographer to take your equine portraits probably won’t result in you receiving the pictures you had envisioned in your head. Seeking out a photographer who specializes in the field of equine photography is a good thing!
What is their Experience
Hiring someone with some experience under their belt is probably wise but not always what everyone is looking for. There is a saying in the photography world that “there is a photographer for everyone.” If you want a specific type of picture and getting exactly what you want is important to you, then hiring a photographer with experience is a wise decision. A photographer with experience will also excel at customer service, posing body types and dealing with whatever scenario may pop up.
Is the Cost in your budget
I don’t think photographers educate their clients enough on this topic, so here goes. Consider the cost of a photographer. This goes along with experience as well. It makes sense that well-established photographers are going to cost significantly more than new, first-time photographers.
So while there are definitely much cheaper photographers, I caution you to make sure they have systems in place to protect you and your images. The best thing you can do is educate yourself and ask questions.
I hope this helps you find that perfect photographer. When you find that right person, please take a deep breath and trust them completely!
