The Story of a gypsy horse and one determined little girl:
When I got the call regarding booking a barrel clinic with Lee Ann Rust on the grounds for kids, I never considered registering my own kiddo. As the date grew nearer and I chatted with a few of the mom’s as they called to book stabling, I began to think that Dolly would have fun. After all, shouldn’t our childhood memories be filled with long hot summer days, friends, family and of course horses! Days full of laughter and adventure. I signed her up, jumping saddle and all.
I was working in the office during the clinic and am so grateful to the wonderful friends I have made in Vermilion who took my little muffin and made sure she was fed and watered. (and that she didn’t run the legs off the gypsy!) I stuck my head out the door often to make sure I wasn’t needed. I did however have to grab some pictures for our website of the grounds and took a walk out during the afternoon to see how things were going.
For some reason I am never fast enough to catch spur of the moment images on my phone. I fumble and fidget and miss the moment. You would think that it would be something I could do with ease but it just never happens. Put a camera in my hand and I am like a gunslinger with the fastest draw in town. Take this photo for instance. It all happened in under 10 seconds. I looked over, stopped talking, lifted my camera and snapped a picture. Before I knew it the moment had passed. She was on and walking away. She doesn’t need the fence, a bucket or a leg up to get on anymore. I miss that little spitfire that was so independent.
The Memory:
One image that tells it all. Her skin is tanned from being in the sun. The gypsy patiently waits for her to climb on, he is probably played out and couldn’t move if he wanted! She is still to little to get on without help and needs the rail to get up. She is looking over, probably at the other kids. She has her Macy Beans on with her jumping saddle. She loved those red boots and didn’t care that they weren’t the proper english attire. She wore them out before retiring them for good. It is fitting that this image is from the Vermilion Agricultural Society as she has spent hours there while I work. She has picked so many caterpillars off those trees in the background. Played in the barn. Ran in the grass and ridden her horse on the grounds.
Telling stories, one image at a time.
